The birth of Ava DuVernay occurred on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay learned to love art from the aunt Denise. The aunt she had was a nurse who did night shifts to ensure that she could dedicate her time to literature, theatre, and art. DuVernay was captivated by the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt showed her to DuVernay. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's examples of how art could serve as an effective vehicle for social activism. After being disappointed in journalism due to the work she was assigned, DuVernay decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay began her first position as a publicity specialist in a small production studio right after she graduated from school.
